A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
