EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
