Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
